How to Improve Your Mood with Food
Most of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we should stay away from them. Often, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, comfort foods can be perfectly nourishing and good for us to eat. There are some foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.
Eggs, you may be astonished to find out, are fantastic at combating depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the yolk. The egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for lifting up your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Try eating an egg and be happy!
Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is called the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a super protein source.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you wish to combat depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.
Grains can be wonderful for overcoming a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly great for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to better your mood. Feeling starved can really make you feel terrible! These grains can improve your mood because it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. You digest these grains quicker than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You just knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This helps better your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel better. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood also!
So you see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Try some of these hints instead.
