Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood
A lot of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we must stay away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, you might be astonished to learn, are fantastic at battling depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for elevating your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Try eating an egg and jolly up!
Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given moment. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic source of protein.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to combat depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.
Some grains are really wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly great for helping increase your happiness levels. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods too. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is actually great for your mood. You were simply anticipating to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while calming the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you consume green tea. And now you know green tea can help raise your mood too!
As you can see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try some of these suggestions instead.
