Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

Most of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that, when you eat them, could better your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, test out a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you combat depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating an egg and be happy!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more serotonin in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a terrific source of protein.

If you would like to overcome depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. These are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. Feeling hungry can be terrible! These grains can help your mood elevate because it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This helps improve your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

As you can see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Test out these suggestions instead!
