How to Improve Your Mood with Food
A lot of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we have to stay away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, could improve your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, test out some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at fighting back depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for elevating your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and jolly up!
Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you wish to fight depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly elevate your mood.
Some grains are really wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually wonderful for helping boost your happiness levels. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. You digest these grains faster than other foods which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.
Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You were just waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while at the same calming the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you are well aware that it helps you to raise your moods also!
Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
