A lot of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are bad and are to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is very true. At times, comfort foods can be very nutritious and good for us to consume. There are a number of foods that basically can raise your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are terrific for helping you fight depression. You should make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Eat an egg and jolly up!
Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible because these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a great protein food source.
If you would like to beat depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
Some grains are actually excellent for driving away bad moods. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are excellent at helping you have a happier mood. They help you feel full as well which can really help to better your mood. Feeling famished can be a real downer! These grains can improve your mood since it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You were just expecting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This helps improve your mental acuity while calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you drink green tea. And now you are aware that it can help raise your mood too!
Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
