Try Using Food to Improve Your Mood

For the most part, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this holds true. Soemtimes, comfort foods can be very nutritious and good for us to eat. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, try some of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are great for helping you combat depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to raise your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Eat an egg and feel better!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for raising your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which increases serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that directs the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more serotonin in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a superb protein source.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you are wanting to combat depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3s. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight depression.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a bad mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel better. They help you feel full too which can really help to make your mood better. Feeling starved can be awful! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You were already aware that that green tea helps you be healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you so you can feel better! Go with these hints instead!
