Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood
A lot of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are terrible and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be very healthy and good for you. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, could boost your mood. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at fighting back depression. You must make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. Whenever you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you raise your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating an egg and cheer up!
Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a great source of protein.
Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to battle depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
Grains can be excellent for fighting a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all excellent for helping you feel better. They help you feel full too which can really help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. You digest these foods more quickly than other foods which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.
Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You were just waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to elevate your moods too!
As you can see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you wish to feel better! Try several of these instead!
