Use Food to Improve Your Mood

A lot of us have been taught to think that comfort foods are bad and must be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be really nutritious and good for you. There are some foods that, when you eat them, could better your mood. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional boost, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really terrific at beating back depression. Just be sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. Whenever you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Try eating an egg and cheer up!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are great if you want to be in a better mood. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight back depression.

It’s not hard to drive away your bad mood when you consume grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are excellent at helping you have a happier mood. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to make your mood better. It’s easy to feel depressed when you are starving! These grains can help your mood elevate as it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your glucose levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly excellent for your mood. You just knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while also relaxing the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you feel better. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try some of these instead!
