Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood
Most of us have been taught to think that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly nourishing and good for us to eat. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, may improve your mood. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try several of these.
Eggs, you may be astonished to learn, are terrific at battling depression. Just make sure that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Eat an egg and feel happier!
Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein food source.
Cold water fish are excellent if you wish to feel better. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you fight your depression.
It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel happier. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were just expecting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you know that it helps you to lift your moods also!
As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try a few of these tips instead.
