Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood

For the most part, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and need to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that, when you consume them, may boost your mood. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, test out a couple of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to find out, are wonderful at combating depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try eating an egg and jolly up!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for raising your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a super source of protein.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you wish to battle depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight depression.

Some grains are actually great for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They can help you feel full for longer also, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can really bring you down! These grains can help your mood elevate because it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You were sure green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you become better. Now you know that green tea helps you to raise your moods also!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these hints instead.
